The Opportunity

Philip Chun are seeking multiple Building Surveyors / Building Code Consultants of varying experience to join our team located at Mascot.

Reporting to the Airport Building Controller and working with a collaborative team, you will be working on Australia’s largest operational airport with projects across the entire precinct including construction works to the international and domestic terminals, associated infrastructure projects and other support buildings and projects on airport land.

This role will allow you to establish yourself as part of a leading statutory authority consultancy team that is working directly through Philip Chun and the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development in the primary role of delivering approvals and managing the overall building control function to the airport precinct.

Suitable applicants will have a knowledge of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) as well as proven prior experience in a variety of projects and will have an understanding of the building control function whether previously at Council or in private building surveying practice as applicable to their current level of experience.

Approvals for the airport works are issued by the Airport Building Controllers under the umbrella of the Department and the opportunity exists to the right candidates to advance to an Airport Building Controller position.

For the roles offered, you must have the ability to pass Federal Security clearance which we will assist you with should you be successful.

Key Responsibilities

The following are deemed the key responsibilities for the role, dependent on your experience

  • Carry out the day-to-day functions of a Building Controller / Building Surveyor and Building code consultant, acting in the position of ABC or providing support to the ABCs.
  • Assessing applications for and issuing Building Permits, Work Permits and Demolition Authorisations as required under Airports Act 1996 And Airports (Building Control) Regulations 1998.
  • BCA assessment and reporting, including carrying out inspections of buildings together with preparation and issue of inspection reports.
  • Communicate and interact well with applicants in a written and verbal capacity.
  • Attend meetings with applicants and consultants.
  • Advise on BCA compliance and regulatory compliance matters in relation to the Airports Act & Building Control Regulations.
  • Partake in assessment of performance-based solutions on all classes of buildings including liaising with fire safety engineers and Fire & Rescue NSW if and where applicable.
  • Flexibly adapt to a dynamic work environment as well as managing time to meet project budgets and time frames.
  • Attend training and where the opportunity exists provide training on compliance to others.

Qualifications & Competencies

The following are the requisite qualifications and competencies for the role:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in a relevant field, be it Building Surveying, Engineering or similar.
  • Working in industry with the intention to gain experience towards accreditation with NSW Department of Fair Trading.
  • Having relevant experience to seek accreditation as any of the accreditations below.
  • Accredited with NSW Department of Fair Trading in either Local Government or private sector as a:
    • Building Surveyor – Unrestricted
    • Restricted (all classes of building)
    • Restricted (class 1 and 10)
  • Appropriate to your current position, the knowledge and experience with the EP&A Act and EP&A Regulations, BCA (Volume 1 and 2) including documents adopted by reference in the BCA such as Australian Standards.
  • It will be advantageous if candidates have knowledge of the Airports Act and Building Control Regulations, however not mandatory.
  • Good management, organisational and communication skills.
  • Experience working across a diverse range of projects is preferred.
  • A desire to be part of our team including mentoring and training junior staff where relevant.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with government and airport stakeholders to meet their requirements.
  • An understanding of MS Office suite of products is required.

Reporting to the Airport Building Controller and working with a collaborative team, you will be working on one of Australia’s premier construction projects worth 11 Billion dollars and the only new airport project, the new Nancy Bird International Airport (Western Sydney Airport) located at Badgery’s Creek.

This role will allow you to establish yourself as part of a leading statutory authority consultancy working directly through Philip Chun, the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development.

You will have an excellent knowledge of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) as well as proven prior experience in a wide variety of projects.

You must have the ability pass Federal Security clearance for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out the day-to-day functions of a Building Code Consultant
  • Assessing applications for and issuing Exemptions, Building Permits, Work Permits and Demolition Authorisations as required under Airports Axt 10996 And Airports (Building Control) Regulations 1998

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience applying the Building Code of Australia and Queensland Development Code.
