In 2024, Bell Station was recognized as one of the world's most beautiful passenger stations by the prestigious Prix Versailles, joining an elite group of only six other stations globally. The station's design draws inspiration from Preston's rich heritage, incorporating elements reminiscent of the suburb's post-war rooftops in its striking three-dimensional facade pattern and colored glazing. This project is part of Victoria's ambitious 'Big Build' Level Crossing Removal Project, which aims to replace 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030. The Bell Station transformation included the replacement of the existing station with an elevated premium station featuring two side platforms.
Accessibility for passengers with disabilities was a key consideration in the design, with features seamlessly integrated to create an inclusive experience. The design complies with the Commonwealth's Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) and the National Construction Code / Building Code of Australia (NCC / BCA). Philip Chun Accessibility provided consultancy services to the North Western Project Alliance from feasibility in 2020 through to construction in 2022. The station transformation also included extensive urban design enhancements, such as pedestrian and bicycle paths, playground amenities, fitness nodes, a dog park, landscaping, and lighting. A new car park with accessible parking bays was added adjacent to the station building, further enhancing accessibility for all users.
